Heat slit through the twilight like a double edged blade. Even though the crescent moon still hung like a circling crow above the harsh desert, the flaming tongue of summer had already started to whisk about the mass of glassy sand. Dunes stood like mountains, amassing from seemingly harmless bales to great mammoths in a dizzyingly steep slope. Creatures of the night scattered about at the smallest intrusion; Great scorpians rattled under large stones with their stingers poised dangerously up above them, glowing in the faint light; A jackalope or two sped from predators and sought out the safety of the meandering oasis; Even a large vulture circled the area uneasily. Even in the weeist hours, life teemed in the desolate terrace.
Into the red-tinged night a huge stallion picked his way carefully across the freezing sand. The tiny rays of light peeking over the horizon only warmed his thick hide slightly, and the air before his kissers puffed out in great clouds of bluish smoke. His pearly white body shone cream, with huge patches of skewbalded chocolate littering the alabaster expanse. Banner and whipcord dissolved into the bronzed blackness, dark as shadows themselves. Crystal blue eyes scanned the premesise for other life forms, carefully easing long pillars forward. His ears were laid back, almost as if the man were annoyed at another presence.
But of course it was only him... Wasn't it?
"Strange place for your desire for solitary, isn't it my dear Re?" Asked a soft and clear voice. It was tinged with a teasing malice, and slid around his mind like icy hands, and squeezed. The dark stallion who had been called Re snorted in derison, and replied shortly.
"It is neither strange nor unsuitable for my solitary wishes. Perhaps I feel the need for companionship," he barked out furiously, "You never know with me, Amnor." A heavy and thick whipcord flashed quickly about his solid frame to disengage the bothersome desert insects. Re's ear were tight to his cranium, as he continued to inspect the land.
There was a soft chuckle, and Amnor breathed out his response in an almost seductive fashion. "You are never alone."
The lad shivered despite the rising heat. As the sun started to peak over the horizon, he was momentarily blinded and spooked. Backing up with a rear, Re whinnied loudly around him. Suddenly, after regaining sight, he worried that he just attracted other equine counterparts. Damn, he thought exasperatedly.
However, when a good twenty minutes had passed, the skewbald prince just snorted irritated, and continued forward.
"Good job, little miss. It must have been your terrifying demeanour that scared them silly and they fled from your majesty's presence!" Amnor snickered meanly.
Stopping to protest loudly and angrily, Re reared and struck out in frustration. "Screw off, you little piece of crap! I could erase you from existance in a mere millisecond!" Seething, Re pretended not to notice Amnor's little chuckles, and stomped forward again. Soon though, he was again confused as a salty, wet tang hit his nares almost instantly and violently. He was instantly suspicious.
What in the devil.... They were still in the heart of the desert land, and it was utterly absurd to image anything wet here. Re felt anxious and very distrusting of the new scent. The stally inched forward, ears flat and tail lashing. Then, his vision bloomed before him in the image of a large oasis.
There were towering bunches of evergreens and birch trees, and near the humongous lake there were even some kind of tropical trees he did not recognize. Their trunks looked like the scales of a snake, and continued up for a very long time with no brances, meeting huge leafs gathered at the top. Squinting, there were even hairy spheres at the base of the leaves. It was puzzling to Re, and he did not trust it, but leapt forward to take advantage of the clear blue water collected at their base.
In the oasis there was a clearing where the firs and birches huddled close together and created an almost cave with a vaulted ceiling. It looked cool from lack of sun and there was very tall grass swaying in the hot wind on the ground. It looked almost like a camp where he could lay comfortably down and rest. It was almost pleasant; a nice place to claim.
Glancing around, the lad was not yet convinced, but a sharp voice snapped him out of reverie. "Look, over there!" Re's visage snapped to where Amnor indicated, and noticed an actualy cave jutting from the ground. Scents of fear and entrapment emanated greatly from that area, as well as mare and foal scent. And old discarded rope lay decaying on the ground near it; unuseable. Suddenly, he grinned. He actually kinda liked it!
Gathering his wits about him, and standing as tall and proud as he could at almost 18 hands, Re shouted excitedly into the night. "We, Always Forever Samning, and Amnor, claim these lands for our own personal use! I now will challenge all outsiders as the Lead Stallion of these lands!" Screaming ownership in an unequine voice, he reared and proclaimed through more terrifying whinnies and shouts for all to hear. This was his land now.
"As it is also mine," whispered Amnor into his ear.
Re shivered again, to his core and to his aeorta. "Of course..."
