Tail swaying slightly behind me, I look up at Hale as he starts to explain the safer places to go, ears perked up and my full attention on him. Lower on the mountain was safe, steep slopes and cliffs were not. A bow of my head shows my understanding, even as he continues. I follow his gesture up to where he says his den is, curious about the tunnels he says are hidden. This land just seems to get more and more interesting to me, a place to explore...
I give another nod as he goes on after his pause, and constantly repeat everything he tells me in my mind to make it stick. Or hope that it does. If I stay, a still quite tempting idea, it will no doubt come in handy. A small smile lifts the corners of my mouth up at being told that I’m not a bother. It’s a bit of a silly thought, one I haven’t often had since I was a pup, but to be told I’m not still feels somewhat good, like I’m wanted somewhere...
“Alright. Patrolling the borders sounds good.” I tip my head forward slightly in another small nod then after a moment of hesitation, I take a careful step towards him, followed by another, closing the distance slightly. “Maybe afterwards you could show me those tunnels you mentioned... If you don’t mind doing so, of course.” The last of the sentence is added quickly on the end, as if an afterthought. My mother had once said I might have been better off born as a cat, that my curiosity would one day get me into trouble. More trouble than I used to get into with my wanderings. I didn't really think much of it when I was younger but now, those words drift through my mind again. I don’t want to see the bad side of Hale, or any wolf really, so I make a mental note to remember where I stand here...

The snow squelched-- no, the sound wasn't a squelch. Nor was it a crunch or a crinkle. No, not a loud sound, but not a soft one either. The snow seemed to speak, a multitude of whispers that made up the sound one heard. Indistinguishable, of course, and nary a word could be spoken that would interrupt the sound. The whisper of the snow was a constant and it matched the paw steps of the wolves that walked it. Perfect prints, a plaster cast could never match the perfection of the tracks the wolves left in their wake. Hale moved with an ease and a grace that marked him like a panther, but his presence was purely wolf in his strength and cunning. He hadn't spoken to Omi, just nodded and then turned and begun his walk. Why speed through life when you could halt and stroll? Enjoy it instead of burning it like midnight oil? This wasn't really Hale's philosophy in life-- he didn't really have a philosophy, actually, having experienced what he had in such a short time of life. His philosophy was more of a 'life sucks' one. But alas. Hale maintained his pace, ensuring Omi could keep up as he walked. He walked right up to one of the borders, paused, and looked out over the surrounding land. "There are pack-tunnels, and then there are my tunnels. You will know the difference immediately." The black wolf spoke this in a soft tone, so as not to be overheard.
Paranoia had a foothold in Hale's mind like none other; his thoughts would churn late at night, worrying and demanding the questions and answers no one could know the answer to. Even with just Arria in his lands, he had been quieter, more careful. Trying to stay out of her way. But... With Omi, he wanted to romp and roar, and play. Perhaps it was another wolf near his age that did this? Hell-- near his age, she was older. Hale was but two and this fae had to be at least four. Hale hadn't fully grown into his skin yet, which, to be expected, but it still caused problems for the inexperienced wolf. Alas, Hale now had two-- possibly-- in his pack, an older and a younger. Beginnings. Foundations. Bases. Solid, though, equal and just brilliant. Hale's second wave of happiness caused his tail to half-wag as suddenly he was off, bounding along the boundary toward the flatlands of his territory. His tongue lolled out as he called back, "C'mon!" Reverting to the puppyhood he never really had. Hale tripped, and rolled in the snow, snuffling in the flakes and snorting them out in great gulps of air. His electric blue gaze tracked the snow, watching Omi, and then he was off again, trying to invite her to play, trying to regain his footing. But not yet his dignity. No, he was still much too excited for that. Sliding up to his shoulders as he dashes back and forth in front of her, darting forward and back and just being so happy.
For once. For long? Doubtful.

I follow Hale along, letting the sounds around fill the space that might have been taken up by conversation. I couldn't think of much to talk about in that moment and I didn't really mind the silence that had fallen, either. I couldn't keep the slight swaying from my tail with my steps as I walk, taking in the scenery. I watch as he comes to a stop and stop myself, only a few small steps behind him. ”Ah. Alright.” My reply is almost as soft as his voice was. Part of me enjoys the soft tones of the nature around us. Silence falls again and my ears tip back slightly.
There was something about this strange, snowy land that spoke of peace, of safety, and that itself made me want to leave. I had left to explore. But now I was older, old enough that I should have considered settling down somewhere that felt safe and peaceful long ago...
Distracted by my thoughts, it takes me a moment to realize Hale had ran off and hearing him calling me to join him, a soft laugh slips from my muzzle before I take off after him. My own running steps join the trail left by him, the previously nice-looking snow now a bit of a mess in it’s still somehow nice-looking lumps and clumps behind us as I run to join him.
I notice his tripping and slide to a stop, somewhat ungracefully, and nearly trip up myself. I manage to keep from doing so, but only just. I can’t help but laugh again, not at him but just at the whole scene. His currently playful nature draws me in and I leap forward through the snow, tail wagging and swaying behind me.
Play is play, it hasn't changed. I don’t think it ever would. It was its own language, something that didn't always need to be vocalized but understood none the less...

As Hale ran in the snow, he felt an emotion that would later be described as happiness. At that moment, it was confusing and exhilarating and everything he had ever wanted rolled into one. The young wolf had yet to feel anything quite exactly like this; no, he was used to a much more mellow sort of this feeling. Nothing quite so awesome. This feeling was out of control and burning quickly, like a wildfire but so much more and so much better and there was nothing in the world he would rather feel. And yet Hale could not describe it, not at that very moment. So the black wolf flung his body into the snow, rolling himself around in it towards Omi. His intent was to roll into her, perhaps onto her, cause her to fall into the snow and roll about in it and get cold, like he was cold. Because deep down the huge wolf was still a child, and that pup wanted nothing more than to play in the snow and he was vindictive, too, so if he was something that made him inferior he wanted the others to feel that too.
Instantly, before he was even sure he had made contact with her, Hale was off his feet and tearing into the snow. He barked with his good cheer, bowling himself off his feet again with sheer enjoyment. It was fun to play like this, and so he decided to engage Omi. He barreled towards her, fangs bared into the cold frosty air, just at the last moment before he might slide to a stop lunging at her. He presented his shoulder to her possibility of teeth, and pulled the force of it at the last second, aim to only playfully bowl her over. Simply because Hale had knocked himself over already thrice in the space of twenty minutes. Rolling in the snow, he half-sat up, shaking his head to clear the aching space. Grinning with a lolling tongue at her, Hale waited for her response to his sudden outburst of, well, just, everything. His electric blue eyes sparked and glittered with amusement and anticipation.

Omi watched Hale with a quiet curiosity, her ears perked up and her tail slowly swaying behind her. This… She had to admit, it looked like fun. A lot of fun, actually… She watched his rolling approach and, with a grin, tried to bound over him, though ended up landing face first into the snow. That same lupine head quickly popped back up and with a quick shake to dislodge any remaining snow from her head, she grinned as those amber eyes searched out Hale again.
With a soft bark of laughter, she watched his approach, fangs and all, wondering next what he planned to do. She took a few steps back yet still tumbled back into the snow from his playing, not that she minded. It was definitely as much fun as it looked. It took her a long moment to finally get herself up to her feet again, but just sat down in the cold snow, her own tongue hanging out of her almost creamy maw as she caught her breath a little. She spared a moment’s thought as to how often he actually got to get out and just play, as often as he would have liked, she supposed before looking over at him again.
“Hmm…” She said quietly, watching as her breath fogged in front of her for just a second before disappearing, taken away on some unfelt breeze or just disappearing altogether. A part of her wanted to say something, actually say something instead of just ‘hmming’ but she wasn’t sure if that would take away from the overall feel of the moment so stayed contently quiet for another long moment. After a final glance at Hale, she shut her muzzle and dipped it into the snow, flicking some of the loose, top snow towards him with a quick jerk of her head, her ears swivelled forward and a grin curling her canine lips up to show she was still only playing...

Hale grinned when Omi flicked snow at him, and buried his whole body in the stuff before charging at her, shaking the snow off in great clumps once he reached her. Taking off again, Hale slid and slipped in the snow, flinging it every which way and laughing the whole time. Jumping in the air to catch a few flakes falling from trees, the large wolf was lost in the wonderment of childhood, lost in the wonders of snow. Of course, as a child, he grew up in the tundra, so he was well accustomed to snow, but it was a rare moment he was allowed to play in it. And so it was fun, the play, but a far-off scream, the type from a horse's vocals, brought him to his senses. Freezing in the snow, the black wolf shook himself free of the mindset and of the remaindering snow. Huffing a hot breath into the cold air, the wolf wandered close to the edge of the clearing, at last letting out a sharp bark to get Omi's attention.
"C'mon, I'll take you to the local pack tunnel entrance." As he said the words, the abomination trotted off into the woods again, heading to the entrance. He moved at a leisurely pace, at ease in his skin and surroundings. It was odd how quickly he switched from one to the other, play one instant business the next, but then, that was Alpha Hale. Arriving at the entrance fairly quickly, he sniffed at the snow for a second before barreling his large body through it, and hence into the cave mouth that had been hiding under it. Poking his head back out, Hale grinned, and then stepped back so Omi could come in too. Pushing snow back up in front of the hole he'd made, Hale turned to her expectantly and gazed down into the tunnels.
